Why You Need to Update Sound Drivers

Although early computers used to be relatively muted, apart from the whirring of fans and disks and the odd beep, now they offer a full ‘multi-media experience’. Sound is playing an increasingly important part in this, with PCs being capable of playing music tracks, showing videos with full soundtrack and websites often having audio output.

Computers are also more frequently accepting speech input through dictation systems or responding to spoken commands. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) allows suitable telephones to be plugged into PCs so that cheap or even free calls can be made.

Why You Need Audio Drivers

Sound may be handled by an audio chipset on your computer’s motherboard, in which case only output sound is available and will be fairly basic. More comprehensive audio is available when a sound card is fitted, allowing a number of devices to be plugged into it. These can include output devices such as earpieces, dedicated speakers and complete home theater systems, and input devices such as microphones. Other audio devices, such as VOIP telephones and voice recorders with the required functionality are usually connected via USB ports.

All these different devices need to communicate with your PC’s operating system. They have to receive and understand commands and then respond in a manner that the operating system understands. The problem is that there are so many types of devices, with varying connections, that the operating system cannot handle all the combinations, especially when new ones are constantly being added.

The problem is resolved by the use of audio drivers or sound drivers. These are particular types of PC drivers that are developed for a specific sound card and have variations for each operating system. They can therefore understand the language of both and provide the necessary translation so that each one understands what the other is saying. It’s really as though the operating system only speaks English but the sound cards all talk different languages and their audio drivers act as interpreters.

Why You Must Update Audio Drivers

Sound card manufacturers issue updated sound drivers all the time to provide consumers additional features, correct known faults or improve performance. You may also experience problems, such as poor sound quality, the microphone not working or being unable to control speaker volume, due to incorrectly installed or outdated drivers. It is good practice, therefore, to update audio drivers periodically, ensuring you have the latest version.

Unfortunately, you cannot just get ANY sound driver to fix audio issues. You need the audio driver that matches your PC brand and model, your Windows operating system, and your sound card. If you’re tech savvy, these information is something you probably know off the top of your head!

If not, then do use an auto-update driver tool such as DriverFinder. It will take care of not just sound drivers, but ALL the drivers your PC needs to function at optimum levels.

Why You MUST Update Your Realtek Network Drivers

For a long time network cards were all about performance. Most of you probably started with a 10 Mbit network card, switching to 100 Mbit later on. Modern computers even have 1 Gbit network cards and servers can use 10 Gbit connections. For wireless network cards a similar summary can be created, using the 802.11 b/g/a/n specification.

But nowadays the network device in your computer is about more than just speed. Speed comes at a cost, particularly due to power consumption. And don’t we all want to go green?

Realtek FE/GbE Family Controller Network Drivers

For computers with a Realtek network card, the latest device drivers offer a lot of control on the network speed and power consumption. That way, you can make sure your notebook battery lasts as long as possible.

A few of the settings the latest Realtek network drivers offer:

  • Auto Disable Gigabit – this option allows the user to configure if the gigabit option should be auto-disabled on re-link.
  • Green Ethernet – this option enables the feature to detect the length of the connected network cable and adjust the voltage accordingly (lower for shorter cables).
  • Interrupt Moderation – when enabled the frequency of the CPU interrupts will be lowered when there is less network traffic. Lower CPU usage, lower power!

There are obviously many more settings, not all relevant to network speed and energy consumption. But in all cases, make sure you install the latest Realtek network drivers to benefit from these features.

NVidia Officially Releases Graphics Drivers Version 260.99

After the recent release of 260.63 in beta, NVidia has now officially released version 260.99 of its video drivers, supporting their newest GeForce cards.

This release is primarily for Windows Vista and Windows 7, but there is support for other Windows versions as well.

The installer for the new NVidia graphics driver package has been updated. The user interface has been improved to offer one-click installation as well as customized installation. The customized installations allows the user to select which additional driver components to install, and it also allows you to do a clean install. The clean install will first remove the older drivers from the system, which can help prevent driver update problems.

The NVidia Control Panel has also been improved in version 260.99, again simplifying a lot of things, like multi-display support.

This version of the NVidia display driver also adds support for 3D Blu-ray disc playback when the video card is connected to a 3D TV using HDMI 1.4.

The new Nvidia video cards, GeForce GTS 450 and GT 430 are now supported. And of course there are a number of bug fixes and performance improvements with the new driver. Performance improvements typically pertain to games and high performance graphics applications.

For more details, you can check the official NVidia Release Notes.

ATI Releases Version 10.9 of the Catalyst Software Suite

ATI just released another update of their Catalyst Software Suite, which is used for the ATI graphics cards. This release includes an update for the AMD display driver (ATI is part of AMD). Like any driver update release, this new version is released to improve reliability and performance of ATI graphics cards.

Version 10.9 includes an update of the ATI Radeon display driver, the new driver version is 8.771.

The main improvements in the new release relate to bug fixes in games and performance improvements in games. Performance improvements vary from 5% to 20% depending on the game.

But for Vista there are also improvements in the AVI video playback in PowerPoint presentations, and blu-ray video playback no longer corrupts the desktop image. For Windows XP and Windows 7 the update also has a few bug fixes, but of course there is still a long list of known issues that have not been resolved yet.

Installation requirements

For installing the 10.9 version on XP or Vista, the .NET Framework SP1 needs to be installed. In Windows 7 the .NET Framework is integrated already. Users should also make sure they use a user account with administrator right to install the updated drivers.

ATI also recommends that you download the old drivers before installing the new display drivers.

Nvidia Releases Version 260.63 of its GeForce Drivers in Beta

This beta release of version 260.63 further improves the performance of some of the GeForce bases video cards. Especially the GTX 460 and GTX 480 video cards will benefit from increased performance, which will benefit gamers the most. Based on testing NVidia claims these cards can gain between 5% and 20% performance improvements, depending on the application (game).

In addition, version 280.63 adds support for the new GT 450 GPU, which also supports the NVida 3D Vision technology and DirectX 11.

If you are interesting in playing Blu-Ray movies, you will also benefit from the GeForce 260.63 driver update, as it now supports Blu-Ray playback on the HDMI 1.4 port of GeForce video cards. Connect your 3D TV and you are set to watch Blu-Ray movies. The improvements includes support for high definition audio streaming for Blu-Ray movies.

Another improvement in this driver release is the better compatibility with games that required DirectX 7, 8 or 9 compatibility for games running on Windows 7. Many games that need older DirectX support used to have problems on both Vista and Windows 7, even though DirectX 11 is supposed to be downward compatible, so this is a welcome improvement.

As always, you can get the latest driver releases with DriverFinder. The NVidia GeForce 260.63 release will be added as soon as it is out of beta.
